set up with someone - 누군가를 소개시켜주다(소개팅)

 

넷플릭스 러브라는 드라마에서 여친에게 차인 (찐따) 남주가 친구들에게 재회 고민을 털어놓자 듣고 있던 친구가 한 말이 귀에 들어왔다.

 

I can set you up with someone.

내가 누구 소개시켜줄게.

 

set (one) up with someone/something

It usually means to associate/connect two or more people, either in a business or romantic context.

 

데이트 목적으로 누군가를 소개시켜주다라는 뜻이고,  with 뒤에 something을 쓰면 직업이나 비즈니스 기회를 연결해주다라는 의미이다.

 

I asked my cousin to set me up with a job at his company.

set someone up

to trick someone in order to make them do something, or in order to make them seem guilty of something that they have not done

 

set someone up도 자주 들리는 표현이다. 누군가를 속여서 특정 상황(함정)으로 몰아넣다는 의미이다.

 

I had nothing to do with the robbery! I was just standing there. 
Somebody must have set me up!
